Snow Parking Regulations in Effect in New Hyde Park on Tuesday

Residents asked to move cars for snow plows.

Between six to 10 inches of snow is forecast to hit the area Tuesday, January 21.

New Hyde Park residents and businesses are reminded by village officials to please remove all vehicles from all streets once 2 inches of snow has fallen.

To avoid wasting time and effort, you should not attempt to remove snow from your sidewalk or driveway aprons until after the snow removal crews are salting plowed streets.

When snow plow operations have been completed, snow removal crews must salt the streets to prevent the development of ice.  Once the snow removal crews are salting the streets there is little risk of driveways being plowed in again.

If you feel that it is necessary to shovel your sidewalk or driveway apron prior to the completion of plowing operations, snow should be shoveled onto your grass, and vehicles should not be parked across the driveway apron into the street.

If a vehicle is parked on the driveway apron and extends into the street to any degree, it prevents the plow crews from completing their work. In addition, there is also a risk of having damage caused to a vehicle either by moving snow, or by the snow plow. In addition, state insurance regulations place the liability for damage to vehicles parked in this manner entirely on the vehicle’s owner.

Do not shovel or use a snow blower to place snow into the street. Shoveled, pushed, or blown snow should be directed on the grass area of your property. Putting snow into the streets runs contrary to plowing efforts and may create traffic hazards.

As a courtesy to your neighbors, you should not direct snow onto adjacent properties without your neighbor’s consent, since they will also need space to put snow.

According to lawn experts, snow placed on lawns or other unpaved areas does not harm grass. In fact, snow creates a natural insulating barrier and melting snow feeds spring growth.

Please clear snow from around a fire hydrant located adjacent to your property so that it will be accessible in the event of an emergency. Remember, the home you save may be your own.

Corner properties are responsible for clearing curb cut access. Snow should be removed from all corner curbs to allow pedestrian access to sidewalks.
