Town Collars Proposed Dog Run at Tully Park

North Hempstead decides against putting dog run in New Hyde Park.

Tully Park will not be going to the dogs.

The North Hempstead Town Board has decided against putting a dog run in at the New Hyde Park-based park after a consultant for the project reported that the available land was inadequate for such a use according to a Newsday report.

A dog run is currently being considered at other locations within the town, most notably at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington.

According to Newsday:

New Hyde Park is home to one of the town's largest concentrations of dog owners. More than 13 percent of the town's licensed dog owners -- 642 in all -- reside in New Hyde Park, according to the town clerk's office. Only Port Washington has more, with 865, making up nearly 18 percent of licenses.

The plan had originally been presented in March 2012. The Shelter Connection, a nonprofit, had donated $5,258 for two dog runs, one at Tully Park and another in Port Washington at the town's animal shelter.

According to Marilynn Glasser, of Parks and Pastimes Inc., w ho had been hired as a consultant on the project, a minimum of one acre is required for a suitable dog run.
