Town of Hempstead Notebook: Potholes Around the Town, Animal Shelter Hires More Workers

Potholes Problems

Potholes have become a concern among residents in several different towns across the , including , , , New Hyde Park, and .

According to the Town of Hempstead, "During the winter months, the Highway Department will fill the potholes with temporary cold patch, until permanent repairs can be made the following spring."

As of Feb. 18, there had been 115 potholes reported to the Town of Hempstead this year, compared with 127 total last year.

Potholes should be reported directly to the Highway Department at (516) 489-5000 or e-mailed to pothole@tohmail.org. Residents should provide the exact street address and the nearest cross street.

Potholes on county roads can be reported to the Nassau County Department of Public Works. To do so, either call (516) 571-6900 or send a specific location to pothole_emergencies@nassaucountyny.gov.

TOH Animal Shelter Hires More Workers

After to the staff last week, the Town of Hempstead has hired a rescue liaison and an adoption coordinator.

Wendy Cariello has been named as the rescue liaison. She had previously worked at the Baldwin Animal Shelter and received a letter of recommendation from the Freeport Animal Shelter. The job will start as a part-time position until the town can assess whether or not it is necessary to switch it to a full-time position.

The adoption coordinator is Shari Polen. She was recommended by PAWS New England, where she helped set up the group's Facebook page. This will be a full-time position.

The town's animal shelter has received a black eye in recent months, as residents and former employees have continuously .

Board of Appeals to Meet Wednesday

The Town of Hempstead Board of Appeals will hold its regularly scheduled meetings on Wednesday, March 2, at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
