Traffic on North Tenth Street in New Hyde Park Modified

New Hyde Park Village Board changes direction of block to one-way.

Following a change made by New York State in removing the traffic light on Jericho Turnpike at North Tenth Street and placing a double-yellow median at the location, the New Hyde Park Village Board made its own modification during a meeting on February 5 at the village hall.

“So now when you come out of North Tenth, you can only make a right-hand turn, you can’t make a left anymore,” Lofaro said regarding the double-yellow line. “It’s creating, as we discussed, a hardship for the people that live on the block because now they can’t, they have to continue to go around in a circle, they can’t go westbound because they can’t go up their block, they can only go down it.”

Lofaro believed that the resolution would be changing the one-way restriction on the block to be one-way for the first 100 ft. with the remainder of the block allowing two-way traffic.

The direction of the street would remain one-way southbound on North Tenth Street from Jericho Turnpike for 100 ft. and the rest of the block would be two-way. A stop sign would also be placed for traffic headed northbound on the street.

“This definitely supports what the (majority of) residents on the block would like to see happen.” mayor Daniel Petruccio said.
