Voting Method Up in the Air for Upcoming New Hyde Park Village Election

Either the traditional lever machines or a paper ballot could be used.

The voting method is still being determined for the March 15 election of New Hyde Park Village Trustees. Deputy Mayor Robert Lofaro, who is up for election, said the Village can use either the lever voting booths or paper ballots.

Lofaro said after the Village board meeting on Tuesday night that the concern with using the lever machines were the cost. For this election, which involves Trustee Richard Coppola, Jr., and Lofaro, who are both uncontested although there can be a write-in candidate, there would probably be two voting booths, Lofaro said, and each machine costs $50 to rent. The cost for the moving company that brings in these machines is "maybe a few hundred," Lofaro said.

Though those amounts might not seem like a lot, with a cut in state aid as well as a $100,000 outstanding grant for the that was supposed to come from then State Senator Craig Johnson, Lofaro explained that the Village is scrutinizing many of their costs.
