Week in Review: Jan. 9-15

The week's most popular stories on New Hyde Park Patch.

Here are the highlights from the past week in news:

Our poll and story on who mattered most in 2011 from Dec. 30 was one of the top stories this week in terms of readership. A quick recap: we first asked you for nominations, took a look at New Hyde Park’s most prominent people and compiled a list of 10. We then asked you to vote on which person mattered the most in 2011 and the winner was Thomas Regan, a Garden City Park firefighter who was injured while on the job and passed away shortly after.

We told you about dedicated platelet donor Ken Wurtemberg, who is coming up close to 300 donations and has been donating blood for over 20 years. We hope his story inspired you to “give the gift of life.”

Our Nassau Notebook this week touched on the subjects of the winter farmer’s market, traffic and parking violations, bus employees and Nassau County’s Opioid Program. This story sparked a discussion among residents.

We showed you a picture gallery from New Hyde Park Memorial’s performance of Neil Simon’s “45 Seconds from Broadway.” The performers will be back on stage in March for the school’s musical.
