Author Bonnie Grubman Visits Denton Avenue School

Herricks students meet author and hold writing workshop.

Herricks kindergarten and first grade students at the Denton Avenue School recently had a visit by author Bonnie Grubman, author of "How Do You Get a Mouse to Smile?"

Grubman shared the many ways she gets ideas for stories using her imagination and real life experiences, encouraging students to write their fun and exciting ideas in a notebook so they can later use them to build stories of their own.

In the afternoon students in Mrs. Moody's class participated in a writing workshop. The first graders used their imagination to create a menu for a tooth fairy restaurant. The class used adjectives to create clever and descriptive names for appetizers, entrees, side dishes and desserts.

Students wore "imagination" glasses to help them "envision" new ideas for their menu, and named their tooth fairy restaurant, "Up in the Air Cafe!"

Denton Librarian Mrs. Koukoulas and the Denton PTA worked together to provide the experience for the students.
