Catholic School Students Win Essay Contest

Six students were honored by the Knights of Columbus this month.

In not wanting to wait until the spring’s Supreme Essay Contest, Grand Knight Brian Ennis from the held a local essay contest for New Hyde Park students eariler this month to write about the "Responsibility of the Catholic Citizen in a Free Society."

The contest included six winners in all, three from Our Lady of the Snows Parish School and three from Notre Dame Catholic School. Along with an award, the two first place winners received $100, the two second place winners received $75 and the two third place winners received $75.

From Our Lady of the Snows, third place went to Erin McKenna, who wrote in her essay that, “We must be respectful to others and care for those that need our help…set a good example for others to follow.”

Second place went to Alexa Magsuci, who wrote in her essay that, “Catholics should donate their time, food or money to local parishes and fundraisers.”

First place went to Nicole DeVera, who wrote in her essay that, “All Catholics should be active in the Parish community and serve God.”

From , third place went to Emma Weedon, who wrote in her essay that, “Getting together with your Parish community and trying to make the world a better place,” is the basis for the community activities of our order.

Second place went to Christina Cervini, who wrote in her essay that, “All human life is sacred. Every human being is a child of God, whether born or unborn, ‘Right to Life’ is one of our orders most sacred campaigns.”

First place went to the only male winner — Matthew Bateman, who wrote in his essay that, “We are called to be stewards of God’s love and to spread his good news.”

“We want to make the Catholic schools stronger in New York State, and this contest proves that Catholic education is alive and well in New Hyde Park,” Ennis said.
