Center Street Circus Links with Seniors

Fourth and fifth grade students participate in circus event at Center Street School.

Herricks physical education teachers Madeleine Maier and Tina Ortiz with the help of Kelly Kornahrens from Center Street School recently organized and directed fourth and fifth grade students in a circus event for their school, parents and seniors.

The goal was to engage students in challenging and unique activities geared to address state standards toward promoting physical and emotional health.

Students performed for fellow students and parents and then took the show on the road to the Herricks Community Center and performed for the senior citizens.

Their circus is another example of how Herricks Schools provide a unique and challenging education for its students.

Of special importance too is the way in which such activities link with home and community members – enriching all.

The senior citizens got a hands-on workshop too trying their hand at juggling, spin plates, hula hoops and more. Students strove to improve strength, flexibility and agility while improving eye hand coordination and body control. Circus activities like juggling, spin plates, spin jammers and tumbling are not only fun, but they build self-esteem, self-confidence, and creativity. These activities work on independence as well as team work so children feel successful and confident regardless of their skill level.
