Center Street Students Build a Bank
Fourth grade Gemini students create new bank and learn functions of departments.
At Center Street School in Herricks, the fourth grade Gemini students created a new bank, the United Bank of Gemini Students. They were each assigned a department of the bank to work in as part of a team.
Their teacher, Mrs. Deirdre Kenny, created this unique project which nurtures and challenges their skills. Their mission was to design a manual for the services that their department of the bank provides. which was used as a teaching tool for new “workers” in the department and also helped the bank customers – family members – understand what each department does.
Students gathered information about banking from many sources including books, the Internet, and througha visit to TD Bank in Mineola. Utilizing existing bank brochures, students developed the services each department would offer and created display boards to advertise their department.
Students opened their bank on April 10 and “customers” were able to interview bank “employees” and view the display boards and manuals. At the end of the presentation, the students challenged – and won – a round of Banking Jeopardy against their parents and family members.
