Denton Principal's Book of the Month for September

The Principal’s Book(s) of the Month for September at Denton Avenue School reflect the theme of peace. “The Peace Book” by Todd Parr uses colorful illustrations and simple text to help young children grasp the idea of peace as it relates to their own experiences. Peace is making new friends Peace is saying you’re sorry when you hurt someone.

“Listen to the Wind” by Greg Mortenson and Susan Roth chronicles the story of how the villagers of Korphe saved Dr. Greg’s life after his failed attempt to climb K2, and his effort to repay them by helping them build the village’s first school. Told in the voice of the children, this story highlights how individuals can take action to build peace through acts of compassion and respect.

Denton Celebrates Peace

Denton Avenue School launched the school year with their celebration of Peace, by sending students’ wishes in clear containers to be included in an international art mural in Japan. During the week of September 23, classes worked on a variety of child centered activities focusing on the theme of peace through the lens of cultural arts and literature.

Denton fourth and fifth grade teachers engaged students in reflecting on the theme of peace through the dual perspectives of history and civics. The school faculty and students are looking forward to sharing their projects with each other. The weeklong celebration will culminate with a human peace symbol on the field behind the school.
