Denton Avenue Students Helping to Protect Endangered Rhinos

Students raise over $1,000 to help adopt a baby rhino.

After reading a recent article in the New York Times about the threat to rhinos caused by illegal poaching and the efforts of wildlife conservation organizations to protect them, Mrs. Lisa Parisi’s fifth grade class at the Denton Avenue School in Herricks felt compelled to take action.

The class researched organizations that were working to protect endangered rhinos and learned about the important work that the International Rhino Foundation (IRF) was doing to secure national parks in India and Africa against poachers. The fifth graders then organized two fundraisers, including a bake sale, to help raise money to support the work of the IRF.

Under the guidance of art teacher Maria Monda, the students also designed and created African batik pillows for sale. Then also put their persuasive writing skills to work to generate awareness for the plight of endangered rhinos and get the Denton community to support the cause.

The Denton Dynamos raised over $1,000, which they are donating to adopt a new baby Sumatran Rhino named Andatu and the rest to support the IRF’s efforts to protect endangered rhinos. The class wants to thank the Denton school community for their support.
