During Computer Science Education Week on Dec. 9-15, 2013, Denton Avenue School students from kindergarten to fifth grade visited the Denton Computer Lab and learned how to program.

Computer teacher Christine Southard chose a variety of activities for the students to learn about writing computer code.

Kindergarteners explored the LightBot app, an app game used to teach basic coding concepts. Third, fourth and fifth graders learned the basic concepts of Computer Science by participating in a drag and drop programming class at code.org.

This game-like self-directed tutorial on coding included video lectures by Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, and used characters from Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies to teach coding concepts.

The students learned about repeatloops, conditionals, and basic algorithms with this program.
