Garden City Park School Band Plays King Kullen (VIDEO)

Elementary band holds fundraiser for music department.

It’s not unusual to see supermarkets try to offer something different to customers besides the usual selections of frozen foods, meats and dairy. What is unusual is to see a live band encamped in the produce section instead of the satellite radio piped-in over the loudspeakers.

Members of the band occupied those chairs for a noon-time performance this past Saturday as part of a fundraiser to help benefit the school’s PTA and music department.

King Kullen had contacted both the Garden City Park School as well as New Hyde Park Memorial High School, inquiring about the possibility of having the two bands perform at the store. Visitors could purchase raffle tickets for a flat-screen TV, BB basket, both of which were donated by Boar’s Head, or a mountain bike donated by Dasani.

“I got about 300 hot dogs,” King Kullen manager Gene Green said, before pointing back at the students, saying “they eat for free.”

All Boar’s Head products purchased that day would also help support the PTA.

“We want to try to beat the high school from last week,” Garden City Park School Principal Jim Svedson said, noting that the upperclassmen had raised about $1,100. “(We want to) try to hit $1,200.”
