Herricks Board of Ed Meets with Middle School Students

Middle school student government shares thoughts, ideas with board members.

Flanked by middle school principal Joe Leccese and faculty advisor Tom Fauvell, the Herricks Middle School student government held their annual meeting with the Herricks Board of Education on Dec. 9. Arranged in a circle at the rear of the cafeteria, students once again gave reports from their various committees such as Activities & Dances to Fundraising, Public Relations and Buildings & Grounds.

Suggestions for the improvement of student life given to the Board ranged from installing fans and ventilation in the gym to keep it cool during school dances, crowning and seeding the sports fields, continuing to hold the eighth grade graduation at the Tilles Center, continuing to improve the courtyard in preparation of a 9/11 memorial for the tenth anniversary of the attacks on New York City this year and various drives to help veterans including “Cell Phones for Soldiers,” “the Wounded Warriors Project" and “Valentines for Veterans.”

“As we go over this in a little bit more detail,” Board President Christine Turner, “we can get back to you... to let you know if there’s some things here that we could address as a board of education.”  Trustee Peter Grisafi suggested that the board could pick a night to report back to the middle school students. “We can put it on the agenda and so the students know they can come back and see in a few months what progress we’ve made,” he said.
