The Herricks Board of Education held a meeting on Wednesday, April 17. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

May 2013 Budget Vote

  • Lever voting machines will be used this year for the budget/trustee vote.
  • Assistant Superintendent of Business Helen Costigan explained that the district is allowed to use these machines for another year and added that the new vote scanner machines are expensive as the district is required to acquire ballots for each person in the district although not everyone votes in the election.
Student Achievements
  • Herricks High School Junior Andrew Lee is a 2013 finalist in the International Sustainable World Enerrgy, Engineering, Environment Project Olympiad. He will be going to Houston to compete in May.
  • Herricks High School students Raphael Kim, Byeongho Jung, Shweta Lodha, Shivani Sheth, Abhinav Talwar and Michelle Vancura received recognition at the Molloy College Science Fair.
  • The Herricks Econ Challenge team was fourth in the tri-state region Adam Smith Division of the New York Econ Challenge. The team members include Brian Chen, Kerianne DiBattista, Ben Pleat and Ammar Hamid.
Grants
  • The board of education approved a gift of $3,500 from the Herricks Korean Community to buy high school agenda books.
  • A grant of $1,000 from the Herricks High School Parent Teacher Student Association will be used to buy an air conditioner for the high school’s 7 wing.
  • The board accepted a gift of two $1,000 scholarships for seniors from the Herricks Community Fund.
  • A grant of $649.25 from the Center Street PTA was accepted by the school district to buy Really Good Stuff equipment. 
Contracts
  • The board approved of an agreement with the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center to provide afterschool care for the 2013-2014 school year.
  • The board approved a skilled trades bid from Educational Data Services of $1,990 from April 1, 2013 through March 31, 2014.
  • The board approved jointly bidding for materials and supplies as well as transportation with other school districts.
The next meeting of the Herricks Board of Education will be on Thursday, May 2 at 7:15 p.m. at the community center.
