Other news from the June 7 board of education meeting.
The Herricks Board of Education held a meeting on Thursday, June 7. Here are some of the things you may have missed.
Breakfast Program
- The results of the school breakfast survey were available for the board’s consideration.
- Their decision not to offer a school breakfast program for the 2012-13 school year was in keeping with the survey results, of which in each of the schools (Center Street, , Searingtown and the sixth grade) over 80 percent of the respondents said they would not to participate in a school breakfast program.
- By law, a school district must offer a breakfast program unless 80 percent of families who respond to the survey decline to participate, and a survey must be conducted each year.
- Grade 6 had the highest percentage of no’s with 94 percent and Center Street had the smallest no percentage with 82 percent.
- Board member Peter Grisafi added that if a student really needed the program that it would be available for them.

- A donation of $17,640 from the Denton Avenue Parent Teacher Association was accepted to be used toward about 30 iPads, covers and other resources.
- Superintendent Dr. John Bierwirth noted later in the meeting that there might be an additional discount so perhaps more iPads than previously anticipated could be purchased.
Other Board News
- The board approved a $10 increase in students’ fees toward the driver’s education program. The fee is now $435. The fee was previously $425 since 2008.
- A bid for garbage removal from Jamaica Ash & Rubbish Removal in Westbury for $413,150 for the 2012-2013 school year was approved by the board of education.
