Herricks Eighth Grader Places Third at 2013 New York State History Day

Herricks eighth grader Rachel J. Kim takes third place with performance of "Separate is NOT Equal: Brown v. Board of Education."

Herricks student Rachel J. Kim, an eighth grader at Herricks Middle School, recently competed in the New York State Finals of National History Day on April 29. Among tough competition, she placed third in the state for her individual performance titled "Separate is NOT Equal: Brown v. Board of Education."

This is the first time a Herricks Middle School student has advanced to the New York State Finals and Rachel’s project reflected a great deal of time, research and dedication.

Her 10-minute performance, in which she portrayed three different characters, addressed the struggles of integration at Little Rock Central High School in 1957 as well as current day issues surrounding integration. Her research and script stood out among contributions from other schools around the state.
