Herricks Making Security Changes Post-Newtown

School district to increase security measures following Connecticut school shooting.

The Herricks School District will be “making some security changes” in the coming days and weeks, noted Superintendent Dr. John Bierwirth during Thursday night’s regular board of education meting at the high school.

The superintendent noted that he anticipates that the Department of Homeland Security and the police departments will be making various recommendations to the school districts soon.

Herricks has already made some changes to its security and will be making more changes, although Dr. Bierwirth did not elaborate on the upcoming changes.

“There are some sad changes we’ve had to make but that’s the word we live in,” he said. “We’re all changing things.”

One of the changes Dr. Bierwirth discussed is the need of an identification badge for himself and other district professionals to enter the buildings. The district is working on 100 percent compliance with this initiative, the superintendent said.
