Herricks Middle School Students Reach Out to Sandy Victims

Students prepare 130 bagged lunches for victims of hurricane in Rockaways.

After settling back into the routine of school after Superstorm Sandy, Herricks Middle School students in Mrs. Fishlow, Mrs. Jahelka and Mrs. Sabo’s classes voiced their concerns about how to reach out to the victims of the disaster.

Students brainstormed different ways they could help in each of their classrooms. At the same time Kathy Hoey (Pupil Services) sent word to all the schools in the district explaining her involvement in helping the victims in the Rockaways.

A list of supplies and necessary items were suggested as well as the need for bagged lunches for the survivors and the workers who are helping to reconstruct the homes and properties damaged by the storm. The students along with their teachers decided to provide 130 bagged lunches.

On November 30, the students made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, packed apples, granola bars, cookies and a drink in each bag. Each bag was sealed and Hershey kisses were stapled on the front of each bag with a written message “with love from Herricks Middle School.”
