Herricks School Board Notebook

Here are some of the highlights from the Jan. 19 meeting.

In addition to talking about the 2012-2013 budget, here are some of the highlights of Thursday night's  board of education meeting.

  • The girl's varsity basketball team has a 10-0 record, board member Richard Buckley said.
  • Two of the seniors were named Intel semifinalists. They are Anjali Agarwalla and Sarah Chapin. 
  • Sixteen wrestlers placed in the Herricks wrestling invitational tournament.
  • There were questions raised about the course scheduling policy for the next school year. Superintendent Dr. John Bierwirth said that because of fewer personnel working at the high school that students should select classes that they have a strong conviction about. "If you've got the course you want, your schedule is set," Bierwirth said. Parents expressed concerns about students not receiving their schedules early enough to know if there are conflicts or other problems with their schedules. Bierwirth listened to these concerns and said he would discuss getting schedules out sooner with the high school's staff the following day after the meeting. He added that the process for dropping classes that are not manageable will be the same as in previous years; the new policy is about students not changing their schedules to be in classes with their friends.
