Herricks Recognizes Staff Who Aided During High School Fire

Four staff members were honored for help in containing recent high school fire.

At the April 17 meeting of the Herricks Board of Education, four Herricks staff members were recognized for their help in containing a fire at Herricks High School a little over a week ago and helping to keep the students and employees safe.

The fire occurred in one of the boys’ bathroom, Superintendent Dr. John Bierwirth said after the school board meeting, stating that a plastic paper towel holder caught fire.

Employees Warren Webster, Rich Russo, Ben Fiorenti and Rich Clystun were given certificates at the school board meeting for the “effort they made on behalf of the district,” Herricks School Board President Christine Turner said, adding that the four men were recognized as the “heroes of Herricks.”

Later in the school board meeting, a parent questioned whether the student who was involved in the fire would be suspended, expelled or punished in another manner.

Dr. Bierwirth cited confidentiality rules and stated that he would not disclose the student’s name or punishment. School board vice president James Gounaris said that the district will take into account the “security of every person in that building.”
