Herricks Reviews Assessment Info Ahead of 2012 Budget Vote

Board of education discusses budget and assessments aspects of the 2012-13 budget.

The approximately one dozen community members who attended last Thursday night’s Herricks Board of Education meeting were given information about the , the 2 percent tax cap and assessments.

Assessed home values in the Herricks district have gone down almost 8 percent from the previous year, according to a document distributed during the meeting.

Though these values have gone down, since the base of homeowners has increased 3.8 percent in the last 10 years, they are paying more than 93 percent of the district’s tax levy, up from almost 90 percent in May, 2001.

The 2012-2013 tax levy increase of 2.88 percent and the budget-to-budget increase is 2.41 percent, Assistant Superintendent Helen Costigan said, showing the attendees a chart of housing assessments on a block in the district and how their tax rates differed.

Despite a tax levy increase of 2.88 percent, some residents’ taxes on the block that Costigan surveyed could go up close to 15 percent while others could decrease more than 5 percent depending on each household's assessment.

For residents who want to find out what their tax calculation is, residents can visit www.mynassauproperty.com, click on property search, put in your address, go to the 2012-2013 assessed valuation, multiply your assessed valuation by the estimated tax rate of $730.1615/100 and subtract either the basic STAR ($1,158) or enhanced STAR ($2,381).

Costigan also noted that some districts on Long Island, after submitting their budget information to the state, were told that despite calculations that the district thought was under the two percent tax cap, the district is in fact over it and would need a super majority to approve that budget.

Herricks has not received such a letter to date, Costigan noted.

The budget vote is on May 15 at the ’s gym.
