Herricks Senior Advances to Intel International Science Fair

Senior Sarah Chapin received first place in Chemistry and will compete on international level.

Ten Science Research students recently competed in the New York State Science and Engineering Fair held at the New York Hall of Science on March 26.

Senior Sarah Chapin received a first place award in Chemistry and will compete on the international level at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from May 12-19. Chapin has won an expense-paid trip to this international competition.

Intel ISEF is the world’s largest precollege science fair; it began in 1950 with the mission to promote the understanding and appreciation of science and the vital role it plays in human advancement.

The Intel ISEF is considered to be the Olympics of science competitions and brings over 1,300 students from the United States and forty nations together to compete for scholarships, grants, internships and a trip to attend the Nobel Prize ceremonies.

Among the other winners, senior Nirmita Doshi was recognized with the third place award in chemistry.

The students are Science Research students at Herricks High School and have been mentored by teacher Renée Barcia.  Science teacher Renée Barcia will be joining Sarah for the weeklong ISEF competition.
