Herricks to Address Food Allergies in New Policy

Final approval of new proposed policy scheduled for September.

Herricks Superintendent Dr. John Bierwirth explained during last Thursday night’s meeting of the board of education at the that the district is working on adopting a new policy regarding food allergies.

Dr. Bierwirth said that this policy will be circulated to families before it is given to the board for a final recommendation. The final approval is slated to come in September.

The policy won't be “that descriptive,” according to the superintendent because the district wants to leave leeway to specific allergies. He said that he feels this process will get more understanding and cooperation.

One parent asked that there be some kind of process where all children will be educated about food allergies and how to deal with children who have them. While Dr. Bierwirth agreed with the idea of educating students about allergies, he said that he thinks dealing with it on a specific basis is more helpful.

Board president Christine Turner suggested the creation of a group that new parents or parents with questions can speak to regarding children with allergies and their treatment. The group would be comprised of parents of children with allergies.
