NHP Profile: Michael DeMartino

New Hyde Park High School's principal makes a difference by leading by example.

“I’m a very lucky man," said Michael DeMartino, principal, adding, “not many people get to work in a place they love and do a job they love every day.”

DeMartino’s job makes him responsible for 1770 students in grades seven through 12.

His journey as an educator started nearly 40 years ago as a student at St. John's University. When the opportunity to student teach at a small high school in New Hyde Park presented itself, the Manhattan born and raised youth jumped at the offer. He loved the school so much that DeMartino returned in 1973 as a full-time social studies teacher.

After about three years, DeMartino quit to return to his family business, but quickly realized that his calling for classrooms. As faith would have it, the only open position at the time was for a temporary replacement of a guidance counselor out on maternity leave. Since then DeMartino has not left New Hyde Park High School.

During his nearly 40-years at the high school, 14 as assistant principal, DeMartino has seen many things change, but what he says remains constant is the quality of student that attends the school.

"The demographics have changed, the buildings have changed, but one thing has remained constant -- our kids," DeMartino said. "A New Hyde Park kid is well mannered, respected, respectful and hard working."

After being appointed principal three years ago, DeMartino said he has seen his roles change.

“As principal, you have to be responsible for everything," he said. "You are always a teacher, you are always a guidance counselor… you have to be the best that you can be everyday."

He believes that no one should have to work harder or more hours than he does. His philosophy as principal is simple -- lead by example. Perhaps this is something he learned while in the Army for 32 combined years of active duty in the New York
Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve.

“The way you act, the way you speak, you have an impact on your kids,” DeMartino said.

He takes extreme pride in the relationships he has established with his staff and students. In fact he oftentimes find himself walking through the halls making conversations with his students and also does his best to make his staff feel as involved and as appreciated as possible, which he says helps to keep the morale up.

DeMartino admits that he is humbled by the dedication his teachers has for the school and students.

“The staff here is just terrific," DeMartino said. "They are dedicated and hard working they really care and love these kids."

This dedication was made clear when all the New Hyde Park High School staff to avoid budget cuts.

Michael DeMartino started his career in education at New Hyde Park High School and plans to end it here.

 “Being an educator is the best job in the world. I am very passionate and love what I do. Every day is a different day, you never know what to expect. We have our issues, like every school and you never know what can pop up on a daily basis but we handle it all,” said the proud principal.

"Working with Mr. DeMartino has been a pleasure," said Assistant Principal Maria Hecht. "He sets a great example for both the staff and the students."
