Manor Oaks PTA Focuses On Fundraising Efforts

Members of the PTA recalled the profitable events that have recently taken place.

The Parent Teachers Association meeting Tuesday focused on the success of fundraising events held in the past month. Co-president Kathy Wong called attention to the dedication of the committee chair-people.

The second annual Game Show Night raised a total of $626 and Principal Diane Weiss praised the event as, “one of the most fun nights. It’s just a lot of fun and I don’t know who has more fun, the children or the adults!”

Also a big success was the Valentine's Day sale, which raised $756.

Another important event was Parents As Reading Partners, which was a two-week program that helps encourage kids to read. The children were able to experience different countries and send postcards to the principal.

With the snowy weather still looming outside, a motion was passed to donate $300 worth of games for recess as the children will be stuck inside for a little while longer.

Although the fundraising efforts can’t directly help to lessen the impact of the soon to be budget cuts, the PTA is able to help create exciting activities and providing supplemental materials, likes games and school supplies that benefit the school, noted Co-presidents Karen O'Regan and Wong.

The biggest setback that the budget cuts will create for Manor Oaks is staffing and classroom size, as if teachers and staff are cut, classroom sizes will grow. Wong and O'Regan noted that the classrooms are "ready to pop" as it is.

There will be three opportunities in April to attend workshops so parents can learn how the budget cuts will affect their children.

The Manor Oaks PTA is planning for their biggest fundraiser, which is Supermarket Family Night on March 25. Families will play bingo, participate in raffles, and a Chinese auction. The PTA receives a large number of donations from community businesses, Wong and O'Regan said.
