Nearly 90 Herricks DECA Members Advance to 2013 State Competition

Business group has second-highest membership in school history.

A total of 89 Herricks business students will be going to the 2013 New York State DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) competition.

Assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction Dr. Deirdre Hayes made the announcement before the start of the Herricks Board of Education meeting on January 10 at the high school, also offering congratulations to the students.

The competition will be Rochester, NY on March 6 – 8.

In order to be a member of DECA, students have to be enrolled in a business class at school. Members who were selected to go to the state competition  participated in the Nassau County regional elimination competition. Each student picked a different business category such as accounting or management and are given a biusiness scenario such as the role of manager of a new restaurant who has to come up with a marketing plan which is then presented to a member of the business professional. The student is graded on their idea and public speaking.

There are a total 232 members of this group and Dr. Hayes noted that this is the second-highest membership that the school has ever had. DECA been in the high school since its founding.
