New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Notebook: Jan. 9

Here are the highlights from the meeting.

In case you missed the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park board meeting Monday night, here are some of the highlights:

  • Garden City Park School principal James Svendsen gave a “Welcome to Garden City Park School” address prior to the start of the regular meeting.
  • Superintendent Robert Katulak announced that math teacher Mrs. Susan Schlueck received a $250 grant from NEFCU for her project, Know That Fact. The project will be used to enhance Mrs. Schlueck’s math instruction and enable students to practice math facts while developing fluency in an engaging manner through visual and auditory reinforcement.
  • Math clinic sessions will be available for any student who scored below the state reference point on the math assessment in grades four, five, six and all third graders. “The sessions begin this week and focus on familiarity with the state test and areas of weakness ascertained through test data gap analysis,” Katulak said.
  • Trustee Joan Romagnoli said that there will be a program sponsored by the Pupil Personnel Services called the “See-Saw” program, which will help students transition from elementary school to middle school to high school. The program will be on Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. at H. Frank Carey High School.
  • Vice President John Bongiorno commented on Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s statement that he wants to be an advocate for the children because there aren’t any in “New York State.” “I find that rather interesting because…the reason we got involved in this as board members and continue to serve is because we want to be advocates for our children,” Bongiorno said. “Really, we’re all here for one reason, and the reason is to ensure that our children receive the best education that we can give them.”

The next board of education meeting will be on Feb. 13 at the Hillside Grade School at 7:30 p.m. for the public budget input session. The regular meeting will follow at 8 p.m.
