New Hyde Park-Garden City Park School District Sixth Grade Science Fair

Sixth grade students from the New Hyde Park – Garden City Park School District showed their creativity and curiosity at Wednesday night's science fair.

From an oozing volcano and using balloons to demonstrate forces of motion to examining which type of bread molds fastest, the sixth graders of the  displayed their scientific curiosities Wednesday at the .

Lara Holzkamp, a science teacher at Hillside Grade School and , said students were assigned the project back in December. The students chose any topic they wanted as long as it was approved by the science teachers. Students had to use the steps of the Scientific Method outline, Holzkamp added.

“I am very proud of all the students for their hard work and use of the scientific method," Holzkamp said. "I could tell that they enjoyed the topics they chose and put together professional looking display boards to share their information."

“Eight out of 13 people found it easier to see the objects without sunglasses,” Rebecca said.

Two students, Keitha and Caitlin from Hillside Grade School, wanted to see which type of bread molds fastest.

“It would be fun to do something I haven’t done,” Caitlin said. “My mom always yells at me for leaving bread out in the open… [we found] different types of bread molds faster!”

The outcome -- according to Keitha and Caitlin's scientific study, raisin bread molded the fastest in six days, followed by white bread, rye bread and wheat.

The winners of the projects were chosen by science teachers Joanne LaRocca and Lara Holzkamp to represent their school and participate in the Nassau Community College Science Fair. On March 19, the students selected will compete against other sixth and seventh grade students from all over Long Island.
