New Hyde Park Memorial Class of 2013 Receive Awards

Several colleges give awards to juniors at National Junior Honor Society ceremony.

The National Junior Honor Society Inductions and Academic Awards night was held on May 24 at the auditorium.

The number of inductees included 115 eighth graders, 28 ninth graders, and 10 tenth graders.

Students from 9th through 11th grade were also able to earn the Bronze, Silver and Gold medals. Points for these medals are accrued beginning in ninth grade: 2 points for High Honor Roll, 1 point for Honor Roll, no points for Principal's List) during marking periods 1, 2 and 3 only.

Bronze requires 6 points, Silver requires 11 points and Gold requires 16 points.

Several prestigious awards were also given to 11th graders from top colleges and organizations. The Junior Awards for both the 2011 and 2012 years are as follows:

1. University of Rochester/Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award

  • Award: Medal and Certificate
  • Criteria: High achievement and rigor in science classes, high PSAT math and/or SAT math score
  • 2011 recipient: Chris Joseph
  • 2012 recipient: Clara Wilson

2. University of Rochester/Frederick Douglass & Susan B. Anthony Award

  • Award: Recognition and scholarship toward tuition over 4 years at the University of Rochester
  • Criteria: a demonstrated commitment to understanding and addressing difficult social issues, leadership and a dedication to community action, strong grades and rigorous courses taken in the humanities and social sciences
  • 2011 recipient: Devon DeSanna
  • 2012 recipient: Deanna DelSanto

3. University of Rochester/George Eastman Young Leaders Award

  • Award: Recognition and scholarship toward tuition over four years at the University of Rochester
  • Criteria: Strong leadership experience at school and in their community, high grades and challenging courses, extensive involvement in extracurricular activities. Will receive at least $7,500 per year.
  • 2011 recipient: Nicholas Viviano
  • 2012 recipient: Justin Rezin

4. University of Rochester/Xerox Award for Innovation and Information Technology

  • Award: Recognition and scholarship toward tuition over four years at the University of Rochester
  • Criteria: a strong interest in innovation and/or information technology and a high level of achievement in this area in coursework and outside of school, exposure to new technologies outside of school, such as pursuing serious work opportunities in local laboratories or industry, leading other students to new approaches to old problems; business plans for fundraising, innovative community service, after school activities; and best uses of communications tools such as chat and blogs
  • 2011 recipient: John Chirinos
  • 2012 recipient: Nithin Sunilkumar

5. Rennsselaer Polytechnic Institute Award

  • Award: Medal
  • Criteria: Outstanding math student
  • 2011 recipient: Geoffrey Lin
  • 2012 recipient: Allison Bauer

6. Brown Book Award

  • Award: Traditionally, a book written by a Brown Univ. Prof or Alum is given
  • Criteria: Overall academic achievement combined with excellence in written and spoken expression.
  • 2011 recipient: Stacy Chacko
  • 2012 recipient: Adam Jung

7. Rochester Institute of Technology - Computing Medal and Scholarship Program

  • Award: Medal which entitles recipient to be eligible for an RIT Scholarship
  • Criteria: One male and one female schieved academic distinction, demonstrated leadership in school or community activities Demonstrated excellence in the field of computing
  • 2011 recipient: Ashley Dominic, Parth Trivedi
  • 2012 recipient: Aakash Japi, Teresa Lo

8. Clarkson Leadership and Achievement Award

  • Award: Leadership – $44,000 over four years
  • Award: Achievement – $36,000 over four years
  • Criteria: Demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities; academic interest in engineering, business, science or liberal arts; be recognized by student and faculty as having been a positive contributor in his/her school and community; top 15 percent of class
  • 2011 recipient: Devin Hasenflue, Zain Javaid
  • 2012 recipient: Leadership: Josh Johnikutty; Achievement: Linda Zhang

9. Saint Michael’s College Book Award for Academic Achievement with a social conscience

  • Award: certificate and book
  • Criteria: One male and one female, member of National Honor Society, achievement in academic and community service, sustained commitment to community service via leadership roles
  • 2011 recipient: Catherine Gough, Austin Jin
  • 2012 recipient: Ali Mahfuz, Diane Choi

10. Springfield College Book Award

  • Award: Book award, leather-bound copy of Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, waiver of application fee and enrollment deposit
  • Criteria: Junior that helps educate students in spirit, mind and body, service to their high school community and the community at large.
  • 2011 recipient: Pauline Janeo
  • 2012 recipient: Elizabeth Braun

11. International Council Community Churches Youth Award (3 nominations)

  • Award: Certificate
  • Criteria: Student who demonstrates humanitarian and unselfish service in the care of others
  • 2011 recipient: Katja Anuth, Ashly Thannickal, John Stevens
  • 2012 recipient: Dana Davis, Abin Thannickal, Gina Marrano

12. Boys State Leadership Program

  • Award: One week leadership training at Alfred University
  • Criteria: Leadership potential and community service
  • 2011 recipient: Mauricio Chiriboga, Ahmad Malik
  • 2012 recipient: Josh Palces
