New Hyde Park Memorial, Herricks Ranked Among Nation’s Best

New Hyde Park Memorial High School and Herricks High School have achieved national rankings among a list of the nation’s “Most Challenging High Schools” published by the Washington Post.

New Hyde Park achieved a national ranking of No. 826, a state ranking of No. 74 in New York and a No. 20 ranking in Nassau County. Herricks meanwhile was ranked No. 274 in the country, No. 21 in the state and No. 8 in Nassau.

A total of 1,933 high schools were ranked throughout the nation on an index the Washington Post determined using a ratio of graduating high school seniors to the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given in a single year. The rankings also take into consideration the number of families that qualify for lunch subsidies and the percentage of graduates who passed one or more college-level exams during their high school careers.

Only 9 percent of the approximately 22,000 U.S. public high schools qualified for a ranking. New Hyde Park Memorial High School fell 19 spots from its position in 2012. Herricks fell one spot from last year.

Jericho High School was ranked the top school on Long Island with an overall New York State rank of No. 2 and a No. 80 national ranking.
