New Hyde Park Memorial Students of the Month: March 2012

These students were named as students of the month for their respective departments.

The following students at have been named as students of the month for their respective departments and was submitted by the teachers of the respective departments:

Social Studies: Valentina Baumann

  • Valentina is an extremely hard worker. She has a great attitude and always participates in class. She asks thought provoking questions, has an infectious smile and is a pleasure to have in class.

Physical Education: Steven Chambers

  • Steven is an outstanding student in Ms. Rizzuti’s 7th grade physical education class. Steven is a pleasure to have in class.
  • He is a respectful young man with an excellent athletic career ahead of him.
  • In every class Steven demonstrates leadership, communication and cooperation skills.
  • He is encouraging to the other students in his class and understands that not every student is at the same level of athleticism.
  • The Physical Education staff would like to thank Steven Chambers for being a hardworking student and athlete.

Science: Mohamed Elgohary

  • Mohamed Elgohary, a freshman at New Hyde Park Memorial High School, is this month’s “Science Student of the Month.”
  • Throughout his years, Mohamed has excelled in science, completing Advanced Seventh Grade Science and Advanced Earth Science.
  • He is an exceptional student who maintains a 99 average in Ms. Kosmij’s Advanced Living Environment class.
  • Mohamed is an intelligent and extremely hard working young man.
  • Whether the topic is cellular respiration, photosynthesis or genetic engineering, he can explain complicated principles, write coherent essays, and be fascinated with it all.
  • His sincere eagerness to learn more about the living environment makes him a pleasure to teach in class.
  • Congratulations, Mohamed, on being chosen “Science Student of the Month,” a well-deserved honor.

Family and Consumer Sciences: Shannon Thomas

  • The Family and Consumer Sciences student of the month is Shannon Thomas.
  • She was chosen for her excellent effort, determination and achievement. Shannon is presently taking Child Psychology and Development and is accomplishing the task marvelously.
  • The Family and Consumer Sciences Department wishes Shannon much success in her goals and hopes that she will continue to be a great asset to our department.
  • Congratulations, Shannon and keep up the good work.

English: Afrin Bhuiyan

  • Afrin is extremely deserving of being English Student of the Month. She is a diligent student whose passion for English is evident every day in class.
  • Her participation adds a new dimension to the class, as she uses sound insight and deep analysis in her exploration of literature.
  • She is an exceptional writer and a model to her peers, who often gasp at the eloquence of her thinking and written ability.
  • In fact, Afrin has gone above and beyond what is expected of her class, submitting her work into various writing contests throughout the school year.
  • Afrin has a gift for writing and a passion for English, which is contagious in class daily.
  • Currently, Afrin sits at the top of her class. She is truly a model student for others to emulate.

Art: Jamie Chen

  • Jamie Chen is a ninth grade student in Ms. Livoti’s Studio Art class. In Studio Art, Jamie has been learning a variety of new techniques in drawing, painting, digital design and mixed media artwork.
  • Jamie is an absolute pleasure to have in class; she is incredibly hard-working and self-motivated.
  • So far this year she has shown a great talent in using colored pencil. Her peers find her artistic abilities inspiring.
  • Jamie does excellent homework, going above and beyond to create wonderfully detailed drawings in her sketchbook.
  • She is an active member in the National Art Honor Society.
  • The New Hyde Park Art Department looks forward to seeing more great artworks from Jamie as she continues to develop her skills. Congratulations, Jamie!

Math: Christina Licata

  • Congratulations to Christina Licata on receiving the honor of being “Student of the Month.”
  • Christina is a 12th grade student in Ms. Joseph’s 1st Period Pre-Calculus class.
  • She is the type of student that most teachers love to have because of her diligence and work ethic.
  • She is hard-working and her academic performance exemplifies this.
  • In class, Christina has proven to be a take-charge person because when she has a question about something, she doesn’t hesitate to ask. She also participates in class regularly.
  • Her academic performance and her overall demeanor are attributes that make Christina a person that her peers can look to as a role model. Christina truly is an asset to our school.

Academy of Finance: Mercedez Martinez

  • The Academy of Finance is proud to recognize Mercedez Martinez as Student of the Month.
  • Mercedez is an outstanding academic student. His teachers report that he is a hard-working student who is a pleasure to have in class.
  • At New Hyde Park Mercedez is an active and successful participant in Track & Field.
  • Mercedez’s future career goal is to become a doctor.
  • Over the summer Mercedez completed his Academy of Finance work-based learning experience at the McDonald’s Restaurant in New Hyde Park.
  • Mercedez says, “I learned that for a ‘team’ to succeed, every member must be contributing at their full potential.”
  • Next year Mercedez’s first choice is to attend SUNY Geneseo. We are very proud of Mercedez’s accomplishments and wish him much success in the future.

Music: Jay Shah

  • The Music Department Student of the Month is Jay Shah. Jay has been a member of the Concert Band for 5 years.
  • He is an extremely talented trumpet player and is the Principle trumpet in the Junior High Band and Orchestra.
  • This year Jay was selected for the All-District Music Festival, which took place in Elmont.
  • He was also selected for the Division 4 All-County Festival which was held at the Tilles Center at C.W. Post.
  • Jay studied privately with Michael Blutman.
  • We all look forward to Jay’s excellence and contributions to the Music Department.

World Languages: John Stampfli

  • Congratulations to John Stampfli, Student of the Month for March. John is an Italian 8 student in Signora Caliendo’s class and as such performs exceedingly well.
  • He is a hard-working, dedicated student who is truly an excellent student. He achieves excellent test and quiz grades and completes all tasks in a timely fashion.
  • John works well with other students and is always willing to help those around him.
  • The World Language Department is proud to have John Stamfli as Student of the Month. We would like to wish him much success in his Italian studies.

Business/ Technology: Alban Zekthi

  • The Business/Technology Department is proud to announce that Alban Zekhti has been named “Student of the Month” for March.
  • Alban has successfully completed three business classes which included Career and Financial Management, Keyboarding, and Computer Applications. Currently, he is enrolled in Web Page Design.
  • Alban is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America. He recently participated in the FBLA Spring District Meeting at Molloy College where he took second place in the Word Processing 2 competition.
  • Alban enjoys his business classes and would like to pursue a career in business or computers.
  • Alban’s strong work ethic, positive attitude and self-discipline will undoubtedly help him achieve high levels of success in high school, college, and the world of work.

Physical Education: Timothy Foley

  • Timothy is an outstanding student in the leader’s Physical Education program. Timothy is prompt and eager to participate in class at 7:10 a.m.
  • Every class Timothy demonstrates leadership, communication and cooperation skills.
  • He is an asset to the varsity football team at New Hyde Park High School.
  • He is respected by his peers and the Physical Education staff for being a hardworking student and athlete. Congratulations Timothy!
