New Hyde Park Students Win Journalism Awards

Staff of ‘The Chariot’ student paper recognized for 2012-13 work.

The staff of the student newspaper “The Chariot” was honored Tuesday at the renewed Long Island Press High School Journalism Awards gala, with six staff members taking home awards on the night.

The gala, hosted at the David S. Mack Center on Hofstra University, returned after a 4 year hiatus, with over 350 students, faculty and others in attendance.

The awards were given to the New Hyde Park staff are as follows in the respective categories:

Best Arts Feature

  • Honorable Mention – “Calling All Rejects” by Renjini Antony

Best Cartoon

  • Second Place – “Big Mayan Calendar” by Andy Chang

Best Illustration

  • Second Place (TIE) – “Is Our Speech Silenced?” by Andy Chang

Best Lifestyle/Entertainment Coverage

  • Second Place – “Red Hot Comeback” by Renjini Antony
  • Third Place – “Silence is Golden” by Christine Lorper

Best Opinion — General

  • First Place (TIE) – “The End of Another Era” by David Indictor
  • First Place (TIE) – “Te-Bogus” by Tim Foley

Best Student Profile

  • Second Place (TIE) – “Impressive Feets” by Ahmad Malik
