New Hyde Park Students Win North Hempstead 2013 Recycled Art Contest

Winners to have recycled art pieces exhibited in Albany.

New Hyde Park Memorial High School students participated in the Town of North Hempstead’s Fifth annual Recycled Artwork Contest. Entries had to be made using recycled or recyclable materials, such as metals, paper, rubber, plastic, or cloth.

New Hyde Park students came up with some very clever designs such as a cocktail dress, handbags, flip flops, bird feeders, and art pieces.  Contest winners have not yet been released.

Several projects from New Hyde Park Memorial have been chosen as award winners:

  • Sam Mathew Kooran, grade 9, was the winner for Environmental Message in a project called “The Recy-Quarium.”
  • For Best Use of Recycled Materials, Stephy Mathew and Divya Roy, grade 11, was winner for their “Recyclable Jewelry Holder.”
  • For Best Overall Project, Joel Thomas, Ashneel Raj and Jay Shah, 11th graders, won with their “Empire State Building.”

The winners will be presented with certificates by the Town of North Hempstead and their work will be on display in the gallery.

The exhibit will than travel to Albany to be displayed at the capitol building for the third consecutive year.
