Other news from the October 15 board of education meeting.

The New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Board of Education held a meeting on Monday, October 15. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Donations

The following donations were accepted:

  • $769.92 from Barnes & Noble through the efforts of the New Hyde Park Road School BLT to be used for the cultural arts program.
  • $200.87 from the Target Take Charge of Education Program through the efforts from the New Hyde Park Road School to be used for the cultural arts program.
  • $43.57 from the Target Take Charge of Education Program through the efforts from Manor Oaks to be used for Instructional Suppliers.
  • $800 from the Manor Oaks PTA for “Mad Scientist,” a cultural arts program on Oct. 31, 2012.
  • A donation of $500 from the New Hyde Park Road School PTA for a deposit for the sixth grade boat trip on May 23, 2013 was accepted. A contract with Marco Polo Cruises for the trip was also approved. Superintendent Katulak said that he had met with the Inter-school and respective school PTAs about the procedures to follow regarding entering into contracts. “Their job is to help with the fundraising then donate it,” Katulak said. “All of the contracts are going to counsel for review and then once counsel reviews them and sends their go-ahead, we will go ahead.”

Grants

  • The board accepted Teacher with Technology grants awards submitted by the following Garden City Park School teachers: Sheri Susa (Samsung tablet); Vivian Sirakis (3 eReaders); Kelly Imhoff (donor choose supplies for padded area).
  • A grant-in-bullet aid in the amount of $30,000 was accepted for the use of math books and materials aligned to the common core learning standards and professional development.

Personnel

  • A total of 61 positions of substitute teachers were terminated. A person in a permanent food services helper position was also terminated but appointed to a probationary position as a cafeteria monitor. A total of eight appointments were made to positions of substitute cafeteria monitors/ substitute door monitors.
  • The board approved a list of clinic teachers for the English Language Arts and Math clinic programs. The rate of pay was $50 per hour for a total of $400 per clinic group. The number of teachers who will teach the clinics will depend upon student participation.

Contracts

  • A transportation contract with Suburban Bus for transporting two students to the Henry Viscardi School during the 2012-13 school year from Oct. 16, 2012 to June 30, 2013 at a rate of $949 per pupil per month and $689 per matron per month was approved.
  • An emergency transportation contract was approved with Dell Transportation for a Garden City Park special education student at the rate of $300 per bus per day.
  • An emergency transportation contract was approved with Suburban Bus from October 1-15 at a rate of $1,489 per pupil per month plus matron. A coach bus contract was approved with Long Island Limousine from Sept. 17, 2012 to June 30, 2013.
  • A memorandum of agreement with the CSEA Nurses’ unit was approved.

Other Board News

  • The board approved a list of members for the health, safety and security committee/district safety team for the 2012-13 school year with trustees David Del Santo, Joseph Bongiorno, Dr. Alan Cooper and Ernest Gentile as board designees to the council.
  • The following residents were approved for the Community Volunteer for Education program: Gloria Boyd, Jessica Chan.
  • The board approved the purchase of two Xerox copier machines.
  • The external auditor’s report was tabled due to their being a lack of a quorum of the auditing committee; only two members were present.
  • New Hyde Park Memorial High School will hold their annual homecoming parade on October 20 at 11:30 a.m. beginning at Lakeville Road, east along Jericho Turnpike, north on New Hyde Park Road and over to New Hyde Park Memorial.

The next meeting of the New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Board of Education is Monday, November 5 at 8 p.m. at the Manor Oaks School.
