NHP-GCP Superintendent’s Report: 2013-14 Budget, State Testing

Superintendent Robert Katulak speaks about ELA and Math assessments.

The following are the remarks of New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Superintendent Robert Katulak made during the public meeting of the NHP-GCP Board of Education on April 8, 2013:

This evening we just want to remind everyone of the importance of the attendance of our students over the next couple of weeks as they encounter the New York State ELA and Math assessment. As a district, we’re fully aware of all the controversy surrounding these assessments as well as the validity of these being used as a tool to evaluate our teachers, the developmental appropriateness of the length and the scope of the exams, the evaluation of our students on some of the material that they have not even yet been taught and we’re very surprised but also upset that the state education department issued a statement across the state that all districts should expect to see a 30 percent drop in scores because of these tests.

Despite these facts, our students will excel as they have been excelling and do well when they take these exams over the next two weeks.

On a happier note, we just announced the results of such diligent work, both from our classroom teachers as well as our science lab teachers and we continue to applaud that.

And lastly we remind everyone that on the district website there’ll be a schedule of the small school-based budget presentations and community budget presentations posted on the website and each building will be advertising curriculum activities taking place on May 21 in their buildings and our inter-school PTA council will be hosting and will be scooping our sundaes as usual to have you come out and vote for the budget.
