Notre Dame Band Concert Showcases Young Talent

The students played six songs during their annual Christmas Band Concert.

Drums were banged, saxophones and trumpets blown and flutes and clarinets blared in the gymnasium in front of family and peers during the Christmas Band concert Wednesday afternoon.

The band consisted of fourth-graders through eighth-graders and was directed by Ilya Shteynman of the Paul Effman Music Service.

“We have a fabulous group of musicians, more than 80 [of them],” said Principal Caryn Durkin. “[We’re] one of the largest bands in all the catholic schools and we are so thrilled to have our very favorite rock star Mr. Shteynman.”

The students played six songs: Heroes and Glory; Angels We Have Heard on High; Patapan (A 17th Century Burgundian Christmas Carol); Theme from Mozart Symphony #40; Theme from Star Wars; and Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

“It’s very hard for them to play in front of their friends and I have to tell you, they came off really good,” Shteynman said, who thanked Durkin and the Notre Dame teachers for this opportunity.

“I have to thank the parents, too, because the best gift you can give is the gift of music, so thank you,” Shteynman said.
