Parent Wants NHP-GCP Special Ed Students to Avoid Being Shuffled

The board was met with opposition for their current special education policy.

After the board of education completed their administrative duties on Tuesday evening at , concern about the special education program in the NHP-GCP school district was raised.

Elizabeth Sollecito voiced her troubles with the current special education system claiming that children are constantly being shuffled from building to building to meet the needs of the budget.

“Our children have the right to remain in one school from kindergarten until sixth grade as their peers do," Sollecito said. “They leave behind a loved and familiar school, their friends, buddies and teachers and start all over again. The other children in this district only make one move and that is when they are 12 or 13-years-old and go to New Hyde Park Memorial.”

Sollecito feels children with special needs are being discriminated against and pointed towards programs such as Odyssey and the math enrichment program that take away funding from children in the special education program. Sollecito asked the board to find room in the budget to create extra classrooms for the special education program to avoid constant relocation.

The board stated that Sollecito’s comments will be reviewed and addressed at the next board of education meeting.
