Searingtown School Kindergarten February 2013 Highlights

From Groundhog Day to 100th day of school.

During the month of February, kindergarten students at the Searingtown school in the Herricks School District celebrated a variety of special days.

Students began the month predicting if the groundhog would see his shadow on February 2. They shared special friendships and exchanged special Valentine cards with each other on Valentine’s Day; the mailbags filled up very quickly.

They also learned about the traditions of the Lunar New Year and that 2013 is the "Year of the Snake”; Gung HayFat Choy!

What better way to celebrate Presidents’ Day than by learning about two of America’s most treasured leaders; you might see their faces almost every time you open your wallet but there are probably some facts you do not know about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Ask a kindergartner to share something they learned about these presidents.

The countdown to the long-anticipated 100th Day of School came to agrand finale on February 22. Mr. Lavey played some lively music overthe loudspeaker and led all of Searingtown School in a highly-energizedroutine of 100 exercises.

Next, the kindergartners were led into the primary all-purpose room which was altered overnight into “math central.” They found an amazing arrangement of centers focused on the number 100 and based on the common corestandards. The children were so excited to take part in the activitieswhich included:

  • decorating a 100th Day Crown
  • weighing bags of 100 items
  • stamping 100 stamps
  • coloring 100 objects
  • building with 100 Legos, Lincoln-logs or planks
  • and rolling dice to reach the number 100.

It was obvious this “centennial” day was a success as one can see by the happy faces on the children. Many thanks to the parents who volunteered and helped make thisa memorable day for the kindergartners.
