Sewanhaka Moves to Advanced Science Curriculum

The program is intended to allow students to think deeper and work better.

The Sewanhaka district wide science program will shift to an advanced science curriculum so students can learn at "higher level with greater depth,” according to science coordinator Regina Huffman.

Details about the new program were presented at the  Board of Education meeting Tuesday night.

Huffman led the presentation of the advanced science curriculum with the help of each school's chairperson.

The curriculum was created to provide students with challenges and vigorous work to “better prepare students for success at a university level,” said Floral Park Memorial Chairperson Daniel Mezzafoote.

The courses are available for grades seven through 11 with Regents exams in grades eight to 11.

There has been evidence of success with the advanced classes and the science department anticipates increased numbers of students achieving mastery on the regents, Huffman said. The amount of students taking specific SAT II tests and advanced placement courses is expected to increase as well.

Seventh grade students are placed in the advanced course based on recommendation. The board hopes to have more dialogue within the science department to encourage this program.
