The Sewanhaka Board of Education held a meeting on Tuesday, January 22. Here are some of the things you may have missed.
Distinguished Service Award
- The board passed a distinguished service resolution for Stan Johnson, having served in the district and communities for the past 39 years, beginning his career as a science teacher at New Hyde Park Memorial in 1973 and was appointed assistant principal at Floral Park Memorial in 1983.
Iran Divestment Act
- A revision to a board policy entitled “Purchasing” was presented for first review.
- The change is due to the Iran Divestment Act of 2012 which prohibits companies that provide goods and services of credit worth $20 million or more to Iran’s energy industry from entering into or renewing state or local government contracts.
- The law directs the New York Office of General Service to create a list of corporations and other organizations with investments of more than $20 million in the Iranian energy sector.
- Those on the list will be excluded from bidding on government contracts. The list has not yet been created.
- The board voted to waive additional readings and adopt the changes.
Field Trips
- A total of 103 New Hyde Park Memorial students (50 male and 53 female) and seven chaperones will attend Physics Day at Great Adventure on May 17 at a cost of $65 per student ($35 for transportation, $30 for ticket, to be paid by student) and no cost for chaperones was approved.
- A total of 96 students from Sewanhaka High School (44 male and 52 female) and seven chaperones will also be attending.
Donations
- The board accepted a donation of $900 from the Class of 1960 to Sewanhaka High School. the money will be deposited in the student activities student council account.
- Michael Ferrigno donated a 60” printer/plotter with accessories, valued at about $7,000 to Sewanhaka High School to be used in the architecture program.
Grants
- The New York State Education Department has provided the Sewanhaka District with a grant-in-aid of $10,000 for general purposes.
- The department also provided a grant-in-aid of $70,000 to Elmont Memorial High School, which will be used to upgrade a security system.
Contracts
- A $1,000 contract with KFBPTA, Inc. to hold a program entitled “Prevention through the Arts – Stories of Substance” at New Hyde Park Memorial for ninth and tenth grade students on February 22 was approved.
- The board approved a health services contract with the Hempstead School District in the amount of $889 per pupil for 121 students attending Sacred Heart Academy in 2012-13 for a total amount of $107,569.
The next meeting of the Sewanhaka Board of Education will take place on Thursday, February 26 at 8 p.m. at Sewanhaka High School. The first 2013-14 budget hearing will be held at 7 p.m.
