The Board of Education held a meeting on Tuesday, May 22. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

2012-13 Budget Passage

  • During the , Sewanhaka Superintendent Dr. Ralph Ferrie told the attendees, “From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to thank everyone for .”
  • Sewanhaka Board of Education President Jean Fichtl said during the board meeting regarding the budget that, “on behalf of the board, I want to thank the communities for the support of our budget. It was a very difficult budget season and we appreciate your support.”

  • The following teachers were approved to be paid $270 to grade the science 8 assessments in June: Gordon McLeer, Craig Gordon, Christopher Micciche and Sean Karabuber.
  • The following coordinators were approved for the 2012-13 school year in the discipline listed for a stipend of $6,400 each: Esther Acevedo (World Languages); Karen Annunziata (Library); Frank Geritano (English); Regina Huffman (Science); Eileen Kramer (Music); Cassandra Papajohn-Shaw (Art); Robert Pontecorvo (Math); Matthew Schewatz (Social Studies); Debra Stein-Silberlust (Business).
  • The following New Hyde Park Memorial teachers will be paid to grade the Science 8 assessments in June 2012 at a cost of $270 each for 6 hours of work: Gordon McLeer, Craig Gordon, Christopher Micciche, Sean Karabuber.

Contracts

  • A contract for the exterior staircase reconstruction at Sewanhaka High School was awarded to Capitol Reconstruction Corp. at a base bid of $247,313 with an alternate bid of $12,000.

The board approved health services contracts between the district and the other school districts listed:

  • Franklin Square in the amount of $771.91 per pupil for 21 students attending St. Catherine of Sienna in 2011-12 for a total of $19,297.75
  • Garden City in the amount of $807 per pupil for 59 students attending the and one student attending St. Joseph in 2011-12 for a total of $38,409.60.
  • Mineola in the amount of $658 per pupil for 3 students attending St. Aiden School and two attending Solomon Schechter in 2011-12 for a total of $3,290.
  • in the amount of $800.20 per pupil for 48 students attending in 2011-12 for a total of $38,409.60.

Other Board News

  • CAMFEL Productions will present two programs to each of the five schools on Oct. 10-12, 2012 in order to help students understand the importance of respect, dignity and tolerance in the schools. The total cost for the 10 productions is $2,500.
  • The district has entered into an agreement with the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University to continue to offer college-level business courses through the Accelerated College Entry (A.C.E.) and Secondary Collegiate Articulated Learning Experience (S.C.A.L.E.) programs for the 2012-13 school years at no cost to the district.
  • The Academy of Finance program will continue their affiliation with the National Academy Foundation for 2012-13 with the $1,000 fee to be paid by the district.
  • A total of five district students will attend the FBLA State Leadership Conference in San Antonio, TX from June 29 to July 3 at a cost of $1,595 per student, $797.50 to be paid by student, $797.50 to be paid by the activity fund and $1,341 per chaperone to be paid for by the district.
  • A district-wide summer learning program was approved for identified incoming and current seventh grade students who have not achieved proficiency on the ELA and Math assessments. The cost of the program will be paid by Federal funds.
  • The board accepted $1,400 in donations to New Hyde Park Memorial High School comprised of $350 each from Christopher Gomoka, HSBC Bank, Metlife Resources and Valley National Bank. The money will be deposited into the student activities club account.
  • A mini-grant from the Long Island School Media Association for $500 was accepted for New Hyde Park Memorial High School for library materials.

The next meeting of the Sewanhaka Board of Education will take place on Tuesday, June 26 at 8 p.m. at Sewanhaka High School.
