If you missed the Nov. 23 meeting, here's a recap.

  • On Nov. 10 the district held its parent conference day.  Over 38,000 individual conferences were held.  "Each school reported an impressive turnout of parents that came in during the day and the evening to meet with their children's teachers," Superintendent Warren Meierdiercks said.

Payments

  • Rosetta Stone will conduct six hours of on-site training for district English as a Second Language teachers in January, 2011 at a cost of $2,100 to be paid through a Title III (Immigrant) grant.
  • Authorization was granted to pay $1,200 to the BroadHollow Theater Company for a performance of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" on Nov. 1 at Sewanhaka High School for seventh grade AIS students.
  • Approximately $6,000 was transferred from the general fund to New Hyde Park Memorial for the printing, publication and distribution of the school newspaper.
  • Approximately $4,500 was transferred from the general fund to New Hyde Park Memorial for the purchase of candy for a fundraiser for the Future Business Leader of America school organization.

  • A contract for the transportation of one student to Lawrence High School for seven months and two days was awarded to Veteran's Transportation at a cost of $6,392.88.
  • A  transportation contract with Eastern Suffolk BOCES for one student to UCP Smith Lane from Sept. 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011 was revised for Sewanhaka's proportionate monthly share of $5,870 for the vehicle and $2,618 for the matron plus approximately $189 for fuel costs.  The contract was revised from the Aug. 24 agenda.
  • The district entered into a contract with New York State Code Enforcement Officer Timothy Green to conduct annual fire inspections at all buildings for the 2010-11 school year at a cost of $2,150.  There is no increase over the 2009-10 school year.

Purchases

  • The purchase of a camera bag, film, filter and paper to take and develop digital photographs for the Sewanhaka photography club was approved for $3,000.  The sum of $8,000 was approved for the printing of the Sewanhaka school newspaper.  The purchase of rights, orchestral parts, script and book for the Sewanhaka school musical "Titanic the Musical" was approved for $1,083.

  • A donation of $134.08 was made from Ohiopyle Prints, Inc. to New Hyde Park Memorial High School. The money will be deposited in the Student Government account.
  • Superintendent Meierdiercks reported that student attendance during the month of October was 96 percent.  Over 600 Sewanhaka District students took the SAT exams on Nov. 6.
  • Revisions to the board policy governing purchasing were presented for a second review.

 

The next meeting of the Sewanhaka Board of Education will be on Monday, Dec. 20 at 8 p.m. at Sewanhaka High School.
