You Decide: Top Sports Story of 2011

All this week, New Hyde Park Patch asks its readers to decide the most important stories of 2011. Take our easy poll to help name the winners.

New Hyde Park has seen its share of exceptional players throughout the year. From high school playoffs to little league state championships, these sports moments lifted our spirits in 2011.

BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS: Both the and teams made it to the playoffs this year, but both lost in the first round. The by a score of 69-60 and finished the season 7-11 overall. The to by a score of 58-55 and finished the season 11-7 overall.

MORE PLAYOFFS: The team made it to the Class B playoffs, but , 18-10. The team also lost the first round of the playoffs the year before.   also made it to the playoffs and against Jericho, but was against Floral Park.

HOMECOMING GAMES: Both the and Highlanders lost in their homecoming games this year. The by Wantagh, 35-8, but the fans still roared and cheerleaders cheered. The by Kennedy/Bellmore, 28-7, but the traditional homecoming fun still continued throughout the night.

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER PLAYER COMPETES IN COUNTY CUP: The top 40 high school soccer players in Nassau County were chosen to compete in the inaugural “Nassau County Executive Cup” at Mitchel Field in Uniondale and were split up into two teams. was among the top players, who displayed solid shots at net.

SOCCER PLAYER INJURED: A Jericho soccer player was taken away in an ambulance during a game at with an injured ankle. The  responded to the call and he was taken to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.

US OPEN WILDCARD: New Hyde Park travelled across the county to compete for a wild card spot in the US Open Eastern Sectional Qualifying Tournament.  Shah is ranked among the top 10 players in the East coast for the boys 16-and-under division and is one of the star players on the boys tennis team as a sophomore at .

NASSAU TRACK STATE QUALIFIER: The top boys and girls athletes from schools across Nassau in two divisions.  had a dozen of its team compete in the qualifiers. Notably,  finished seventh out of 10 in the high jump at five feet eight inches and  finished the 100 meter at 0:16.61.

10-YEAR-OLD BASEBALL STAR: Joey Vitiello, 10, of New Hyde Park, was chosen out of 50 or so kids to play for the . Vitiello currently balances playing on three different baseball teams and hopes to go pro one day.

VOLLEYBALL VICTOR: Senior Marissa Ngai has been a member of the  since she was a sophomore and had her this year. Ngai has a record team high of 165 assists in eleven games. Ngai's best game performance was against Bethpage on Sept. 22 where she totaled 30 assists. She also had 25 assists in a 3-2 win over Great Neck South.

STATE CHAMPIONS: The New Hyde Park junior girls softball team kept inching toward and finally by defeating Staten Island’s South Shore Little League Team 7-6 in the section five finals to reach the states. The team headed to the state championships in South Orange in July and was by defeating Garden City South 13-4 to win the district 29 championship.
