Gladiators' 2013 opener delayed over lightning storm before being dealt 44-19 loss.

The first football game of the 2013 season got off to a rough start for the New Hyde Park Gladiators. The Thursday night match at Tully Park against Bethpage was postponed until Sunday at 1 p.m. because of lightning in the area. The weather was actually a saving grace for the Gladiators as they were down 13 points going into halftime against an upstart Eagles team.
“Going into Sunday we need to establish more consistency on both sides of the ball,” New Hyde Park head coach Kevin Dolan said. “We also need to take advantage of opportunities that are given to us.”

Down 16-3 midway through the second quarter a great opportunity was presented to the Gladiators thanks to a fumble from an Eagles tailback. With the ball on their own 40, New Hyde Park needed a solid drive to get some momentum going. Instead they went three and out squandering a chance to put some points on the board.
“We definitely need to establish our running game to move the ball down the field,” Dolan said. “Bethpage is a good team but this a game that we should be able to get back into.”
