New Hyde Park Girls Lacrosse 2011 Preview

This team has a new head coach and a new group of girls this year.

The New Hyde Park girls’ varsity lacrosse team is under new leadership this year, having Coach Lorin Wirth move up from assistant to head coach. With a few years experience under her belt, she plans to kick the Gladiators into high gear by utilizing zone defending, transitioning, basic skills and communication.

Last Season: 8-6 overall; lost in the playoffs.

Coach: Lorin Wirth (first year)

Top Players: To be determined. Of the 19 varsity players, only six remain from previous years, having 13 new girls join the team.

“They are a very new team," Wirth explained, adding, "We need to learn to play together, work hard and enjoy each moment whether we win or lose."

Position Breakdown: “My defense is totally new,” Wirth said. “And I have to talk to a lot of girls who are going to be changing positions as well.”

Wirth wants her team to learn basic skills, but to also enjoy being out on the field during their Monday through Saturday practices.

Expectations: The new coach plans to take every day as it comes in leading her new team. Wirth is teaching her girls zone defending this year because without decent defenders, the team will most likely lose.

“We are learning new strategies and skills that will help us in games,” Wirth said.
