Boys Basketball: Herricks 2012 Preview

Three key players are back to help the Highlanders in a tough Conference AA-2.

Herricks basketball coach Tom Kinsella is confident that his team will make it back to the postseason for the third year in a row. He has a talented squad with three key players who should help him achieve that goal.

"Our guys have been practicing really hard in the offseason in the spring and summer leagues," said Kinsella. "I believe we should make it back to the playoffs this season and advance past the second round."

Senior center George Malonoukos, guard Sudheer Nuggehalli and junior guard, Andrew Fellus all return to what should be a loaded team. Kevin Villanueva and senior Lou Nikolis are also back.

Last season: Overall: 8-11, League: 5-7

Coach: Tom Kinsella

Key Players:

  • George Malonoukos, senior, center
  • Sudheer Nuggehalli, senior, guard
  • Andrew Fellus, junior, guard

Position Breakdown: George Malonoukos will use his height and wingspan to take advantage of other teams defense in the low post area. He will also be able to alter opposing teams shots on the defensive side of the ball.

Senior guard Sudheer Nuggehalli, who also runs track, will use his speed and quickness on both sides of the ball. He will move the ball up the floor and look for his open teammates and if the shot is available he is more than willing to take it.

Expectations: Coach Kinsella believes he has the right team to make it to the second round of the playoffs after getting knocked out in the quarterfinals last season.

"We lost some good players to graduation like Zack Aziz and Jack Kim, but return 10 players from last season's squad," said Kinsella. "We should have a good mix on the court with these guys."

George Malonoukos, Sudheer Nuggehalli and Andrew Fellus will be the main go-to players. Kevin Villanueva and sophomore Tyler Idaspo are main contributors as well.

Key Games:

Dec. 13-Herricks @ Hicksville High School

Dec. 16-Herricks @ Elmont High School

Dec. 20-Herricks @ Great Neck South High School
