Herricks Football Looks to Build in 2012 Season

The Highlanders bring back a couple of key players from last year's team.

After going 1-7 in conference play last season, the Herricks Highlanders expect a big improvement this season with the return of some key senior players.

Quarterback and team captain Adrian Kwan is back to command the offense. The Highlanders will return three of their starting receivers in Ryan Gaitan, Austin Stoner and Chris Rivera. Left Tackle, Nick Markadakis also returns along with speedy running back and middle linebacker, Mike Pitre.

Last season: 1-7

Coach: Mike Yoo (fourth season)

Position breakdown: Adrian Kwan will move from wide receiver to quarterback this season, taking over for 3-year starter Tom Graef.

Kwan will have three strong targets to throw to in the receiver corps. The sure handed, Ryan Gaitan is back along with fellow receivers, Austin Stoner and and Chris Rivera. Mike Pitre will help the Highllanders pick up the yards on the ground at the running back position. Pitre will also spend time in the middle linebacker position.

“We have a lot of good players returning," Woo said. “Our guys have trained hard since last season in the weight room and doing conditioning drills. We have a lot to look forward to this year.”

Expectations: After back-to-back 1-7 seasons the Highlanders are looking to improve on their record and contend for one of 8 playoff spots in the conference.

“We’ve got the athletes to do it this season,” Woo said. “We will find out a lot about ourselves when we play our first game at Elmont.”

The Highlanders will take on the Spartans at Elmont Memorial High School at 1:30 on Saturday.
