Little League Girls Get Big Victory

Junior girls softball team gets one step closer to heading to states after knocking off Ozone Howard 4-0 on Friday.

The New Hyde Park girls junior little league softball team looked stellar on Friday night in their 4-0 victory over Ozone Howard's Blue Angels at Rath Park.

The team was equally impressive on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball against a tough team from Queens. Pitcher Geena Fornataro pitched a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the game.

"Geena was in the zone today," said Coach Will Hickey. "She pitched really well against a team who is known for their high powered offense."

The girls scored a run in each of the first three innings and added another in the bottom of the fifth.

Jillian Sakowich went 3-3 at bat and scoring three runs. Kristen Hickey also had a good day, going 2-3 with two RBIs.

Lisa Pellegrino played well in the shortstop position, picking off grounders to keep Ozone Howard off the bases.

"I thought we played very well defensively despite the stifling heat," Hickey said. "We were good in the pitching and catching positions and the field picked it up when we needed it."

The girls will play on Monday against a gritty Staten Island team for the right to head to the State championships.

"They're a tough team who beat us two years ago in an epic battle," Hickey said. "But our girls have experience and chemistry and are starting to buy into the idea that we can do something special here."

The game against Staten Island will be played at Skelos Park in Rockville Centre on Monday at 7 p.m.
